Dr. Rajiv Jauhar

Dr. Rajiv Jauhar was born in New Delhi, India where he spent his first six years before moving to England in 1972. After 4 years there, he immigrated permanently to the United States in 1976. He grew up in California and went to college at the University of California, Riverside, where he majored with honors in biochemistry. For medical school, he went to the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, where he developed his interest in cardiology and clinical research. In 1991, as a 4th year medical student, he was awarded the American Society of Hypertension Award to present his research at their international society meeting.
He returned to the “Golden State” to do his internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Diego. While at UCSD, he spent 2 years conducting research on the molecular pathogenesis of viral myocarditis using advanced molecular biology techniques. His training continued at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he completed his cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships from 1995-1999. His research interests at Cornell involved anti platelet therapy in intra-coronary stenting. He wrote one of the first papers on the use of aspirin and plavix after stenting.
Dr. Jauhar joined the staff of Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 2001. He was eventually promoted to the director of Interventional Cardiology, then director of the cath lab and now chief of cardiology. He is one of the highest volume operators in the New York area and performs about 600 angioplasties a year. He plays a very active role in the teaching of cardiology fellows and was awarded the Teacher of the Year by the cardiology fellows.
He is active in clinical research with interests in heart disease among South Asians. He has published several papers on the role of coronary artery size as a risk factor for heart disease among South Asians. He has played a very active role in educating the South Asian community on the risk of heart disease with health fairs, seminars, and several radio and TV appearances.
Rajiv has a passion for sports and is an avid tennis player and tries to relive his youth “with his forehand and serve”. He unfortunately has been a life-long New York Jets fan which has been a yearly source of depression!
Most importantly, Dr. Jauhar is a loving husband to Vandana and a devoted father to Devina and Varun.
